Dynamic Planet-Definitions-

KINDS OF VOLCANOES

Sheild volcanoes: Created by repeated lava that flows during quite eruptions and gradually build up a broad, gently sloping volcanic mountain.
Example: The Hawaiin islands.

Cinder Cone: created when cinders erupt explosivelyfrom volcanic event, they pile uo around the vent, forming a cone shaped hill.

Composite/Stratovolcanoes: Tall cone shaped mountains in which lava alternates with layers of ash. They have bothe quite and explosive eruptions.

RELATE VOLCANOE TYPES TO KINDS OF ERUPTIONS:

eruptions-explosive: If the lava is thick and sticky, it erupts explosively. Thick magma does not flow out of the crater and down the mountain. Instead, it slowly builds up in the volcanoes pipe. Example: Mount ST Helens.

eruptions-effusive: Usually shield volcanoes have effusive eruptions.

Submarine Eruptions: Usually occur under the sea and are usually common in the pacific ocean and Hawaii. Bassel

Types of Volcanoes

Shield Volcanoes-

~Broad and slightly domed
~Primarily made of basaltic (fluid) lava
~Generally large
~Generally produce a large amount of lava

Cinder Cone Volcanoes-

~Made up of ejected lava fragments
~Steep slope angle
~Rather small in size
~Usually found in groups

Composite Cone Volcanoes (Stratovolcanoes)-

~Most are adjacent to the Pacific
~Large in Size
~Interbedded lava and pyroclastics (Fire fragments, ash, pumice, lapilli, cinders, blocks, and bombs)
~Most violent eruptions
~ Produce nuée ardent (fiery cloud, hot gasses infused in ash, flows down the side of the volcano at up to 200 km/h.)
~May produce larah, a type of mudflow.

VOLCANIC HAZARDS:
1. Pyroclastic Flow: Rock fragments and gases that move rapidly to respanse to gravity.
2. Lahars: Similar to pyroclastic flows but they hold more water. They are created from debris avalanches that contain water from snow and ice which when released, mixes with debris. Bassel
